Emily Barker - The Woman Who Planted Trees
Static Roots Festival - stay safe sessions - episode #004
โWe need to look to people like Wangari Maathai for guidance and leadershipโ
UK based singer-songwriter Emily Barker just recently announced that her forthcoming album, โA Dark Murmuration Of Wordsโ, will be released on 4th September 2020 on Thirty Tigers. For our โstay safe sessionsโ series, Emily plays her beautiful new single, โThe Woman Who Planted Treesโ.
Emily took her inspiration for this song from Kenyan activist Wangari Maathai. Maathai was a renowned Kenyan social, environmental and political activist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She founded The Green Belt Movement in order to reforest degraded land to provide food and empower women in her community.
At a young age, Emily was shaped by her own experiences with environmentalism: โI grew up planting trees with my family along the Blackwood River to help prevent erosion, and in barren paddocks that had been cleared for livestock during colonisation. Those lessons stuck with me and Iโve continued to support tree-planting schemes, especially in Australia where there are huge problems with salinity due to swathes of land being cleared by the early settlers.โ
At the Americana-UK conference and festival in 2018, Emily Parker was awarded the โUK Artist Of The Yearโ.
We are over the moon to be able to present Emilyโs new single, โThe Woman Who Planted Treesโ, in our โstay safe sessionsโ series!

Rolling Stone Country "Picks Of The Week"
Rolling Stone Country chose Emily Barker's song "The Woman Who Planted Trees" as one of the "Picks Of The Week":
"U.K.-based folksinger Emily Barker will release her new album A Dark Murmuration of Words on September 4th and in โThe Woman Who Planted Trees,โ she finds a connection to the past through nature. โI can tell my age by the height of trees/By the years theyโve stood growing over me,โ she sings, her clear voice accompanied by a circular finger-style guitar pattern and an arrangement that swells and turns haunting."
