Joana Serrat @ Static Roots Festival 2026

A Love Story Written in Oberhausen: Joana Serrat Returns to Static Roots Festival 2026!

Sometimes, the best stories don't happen on stage. They happen because of it.

For this next announcement, I need to take you back to the Static Roots Festival 2019. It was a sold-out weekend - our fourth edition - and the lineup was stacked. Among the artists performing that year were a brilliant Catalan singer-songwriter named Joana Serrat & The Great Canyoners, and a London-based band of cosmic country dreamers called The Hanging Stars.

Both acts delivered unforgettable sets. Joana was vibrant and mesmerising, and The Hanging Stars played a triumphantly cosmic show that had the whole room swaying. Joana even joined the Stars on stage for one of their songs. It was one of those magical crossover moments that only happen at a festival like ours - where artists from different corners of the world suddenly find themselves sharing a stage, sharing a moment.

A Love Story

What I didn't know at the time was that something much bigger was happening offstage.
Fast forward to the Americana UK Music Week in London, 2023. I bumped into Joana - and there she was with Paulie Cobra, the drummer of The Hanging Stars. They told me, with the biggest smiles on their faces, that they had first met each other at our festival back in 2019. That weekend in Oberhausen was where their story began.

If that doesn't capture what Static Roots is all about - music, connection, and the unexpected magic that happens when you bring the right people together in the right room - I don't know what does.

And so, for our 10th Anniversary, it feels like the most natural thing in the world to welcome Joana Serrat back to Oberhausen - this time with a brand-new band built from the heart of London's music scene, featuring Paulie himself on drums alongside Sam Ferman, former bass player of The Hanging Stars. A circle beautifully closed.

About Joana Serrat

Hailing from Vic in Catalonia and now based in London, Joana Serrat is one of the most distinctive voices in European Americana. Across six critically acclaimed albums, she has carved out a sound that is entirely her own - a shimmering blend of Dream Pop, Folkgaze, and Cosmic Country with echoes of Cocteau Twins, The Velvet Underground, Fleetwood Mac, and Fairport Convention.

Her music has caught the attention of Mojo, Uncut, NME, and The Guardian, as well as Guy Garvey and Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music. She has performed on festival stages across Europe and the USA - from Primavera Sound and Benicร ssim to SXSW, Celtic Connections, and Black Deer - and has supported artists including The Jayhawks, Neko Case, Courtney Marie Andrews, The Handsome Family, and Israel Nash.

Her most recent album, Big Wave (2024), was produced by Matt Pence (Jason Isbell, John Grant) at The Echo Lab in Texas. Uncut gave it 9 out of 10 and called it her boldest and most singular work. Mojo awarded it four stars, noting its striking shift into territory that evokes My Bloody Valentine and early Cocteau Twins.

New Music, New Chapter

And here's the part that makes this announcement even more exciting: Joana and her new band are currently in the studio recording a brand-new album. By the time she takes the stage in Oberhausen in July, the songs will be fresh, alive, and road-ready. And you'll be among the first to hear them. That is the kind of moment that makes a festival weekend unforgettable.

What to Expect

A full-band performance from one of Europe's most captivating performers, backed by a tight unit of London music scene veterans. Expect reverb-drenched melodies, atmospheric textures, and a voice that can hold an entire room in its grip. Whether she's channelling dreamy psychedelia or stripping everything back to a whisper, Joana Serrat is the kind of artist who makes you forget where you are and just feel.

From Vic to London. From our stage in 2019 to our stage in 2026. Some stories are just meant to come full circle.

We couldn't be happier to welcome Joana and her band to the Static Roots family. Again!
